Food production and crop distribution in Africa
Africa has a wide variety of food crops, wheat, rice, corn, millet, sorghum, potatoes, etc., and specialty cassava, plantains, dates, potatoes, edible plantains, etc.. Africa's cash crops, especially tropical cash crops occupy an important position in the world, cotton, sisal, peanuts, oil palm, cashew nuts, sesame, coffee, cocoa, sugar cane, tobacco, natural rubber, clove and other production is very high.
As one of the largest flower production and export markets in Africa, Kenya's flower industry has been a major feature of Kenya's industry. Yams, potatoes, avocados, tomatoes and onions are common vegetable crops in Africa. Fruit crop types include grapefruit, pear, plum, apricot, mango, peach, apple, melon, pineapple, guava, and banana.
Maize has a long history of cultivation and is widely distributed, with the greatest concentration in southern Africa, with South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Malawi being the major producers. East African highlands, North Africa, Egypt, Morocco and West Africa, Ghana, Guinea, Benin and other countries also have more distribution. Sorghum and maize are traditional food crops, with the Niger River and the Middle Nile being the two major sorghum-producing regions. Corn is more widely distributed, with Nigeria, Chad, and Niger being the main producers.
Wheat and barley are mainly distributed in the countries along the Mediterranean Sea and Southern Africa. Rice production is concentrated in Egypt and Madagascar and a few other countries; in recent years, the Gulf of Guinea coast, the middle reaches of the Niger River and the eastern part of the Congo Basin also began to grow in large quantities. Cassava is one of the major traditional food crops and is the main food for rural people in tropical Africa, with a distribution area of almost the whole continent, especially in the tropical areas between the south and 16 degree N latitude.
